Future Bear is a science fiction story deeply connected to current debates about climate change. The nature of the debate is secondary to a historical fact, since the late nineteenth century we have argued about how to manage the environment. The Future Bear story engages with that history in myriad ways, but the theme gives us a change to talk about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the public sphere. Hence, we were lucky enough to present to Upward Bound students doing their summer residency at Rollins. Upward Bound is a federal program that encourages high school students to attend college. These students participate in Saturday student session during the year and summer residency geared around academic achievement. The Future Bear presentation was merely one of several STEM related activities they will be doing this summer. It was a great event and they asked smart questions.
